Issues Under Fire: Can International Pressure Muzzle Israeli War Talk

Can International Pressure Muzzle Israeli War Talk Apparently, cooler heads in the Obama administration are prevailing as voices in the intelligence community are loudly, frequently and openly stating they see no clear evidence of Iran's interest in building a bomb.

In recent Senate testimony , James Clapper, director of national intelligence, said explicitly that American officials believe that Iran is preserving its options for a nuclear weapon, but stated there was no evidence that it had made a decision on making a concerted push to build a weapon. David Petraeus, C.I.A. director, agreed with that assessment at the same hearing. Other senior officials, including Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have made similar statements in recent television appearances.

With the Russians blasting their objections to a US/Israeli attack as creating a catastrophic consequence for the region and beyond, it appears international pressure is being publicly brought to bare on Israel to ease up on the threats. With Benjamin Netanyahu visiting the United States for an uncomfortable chat with President Obama and his annual address of APAC, it'll be interesting if the Israeli rhetoric will be toned down to reflect the will of the real world.

Conversely, if the Israeli Prime Minister comes to DC with one of his rip roaring we're gonna drop the hammer on anybody we see fit come hell or high water, the world is in for some serious belt tightening to offset the surging price of energy. President Obama would also be smart to temper his language with the wisdom of a seasoned diplomat when speaking to the APAC lobby crowd, realizing his audience is global and not a cozy conversation with a room full of so-called "friends".
