While the world's attention is fixed on a blood splattered Syria, the United States and Israel doggedly wrangle over how best to eliminate Iran's "alleged" program to develop weapons grade fissile material. Apparently unwilling to allow IAEA inspectors time to verify Iran's progress and intent, Israel's question is no longer to bomb or not to bomb, but when, where and how much bombing will be necessary.
The United States on the other hand seems more content with collapsing Iran's economy through crippling sanctions, targeted assassinations and other lethal covert operations. Either way, with the United States' diminishing influence in the Middle-East due to losses in Iraq and Afghanistan, its crucial that the US find the right strategy to break Tehran in a very public way.
After practically gift wrapping Iraq for the Iranians, the US would look ridiculous if Iran can out maneuver or outwit them on this front. With President Obama entering the heat of a presidential election, he'll undoubtedly be under significant pressure to show his unwavering support for Israeli security. Having the GOP on his ass daily forcing him prove his loyalty, the nation could easily be nudged into the preemptive strike option, if only to stave off the election driven rhetoric.
However, like the lead up the the idiocy in Iraq, people across the globe are sounding the alarm to avert another catastrophic military engagement by the United States: On February 4th, anti-war people held demonstrations against threats of an attack on Iran in over 80 cities in six countries. This is one of many interviews conducted by Global Voices for Justice with participants in Los Angeles, California.
This activity didn't attract much coverage from America's media outlets, but in their defense abortion/access to contraception/religious opposition/etc, etc, etc... is all the rage again.
We think it obvious its all just a political brushfire to cloud Congress' inactivity save for strategic obstructionism but that's what passes for the American political process these days. Issues Under Fire: US/Israel Openly Plot Iran's Demise
