Issues Under Fire: Egypt's Reversal of Fortune

Issues Under Fire: Egypt's Reversal of Fortune

As Hosni Mubarak dies a thousand deaths ( literally), Egyptians wait impatiently while contemplating how next to loosen the military's grip on power. Filling Tahrir Square to support the Muslim Brotherhood's self proclaimed victory, throngs of protestors cheered to the news of their former leader's failing health.

Like music to their ears, every utterance of Mubarak's latest stroke, or most recent heart attack was warmly received news. The only thing that could bring everlasting comfort to many, is the government final acknowledgment of Mubarak drawing his last breath.

Anger, disappointment and uncertainty permeates an atmosphere once filed with hope for a new future. After all the sacrifice, the beatings, the killings and threats of retribution, the Egyptian people may have found themselves back at Tahrir Square one.

Dead or alive, Mubarak's influence still reigns through a legacy of corrupt cronies seemingly eternally entrenched in Egypt's DNA. Finding cures for poisonous infections like entitlement and autocratic rule that's been incubating for millenniums won't be easy. Since current methods of getting relief from a leader's addiction to power is violent bloodletting, Egypt's condition degrading into a Syrian-like struggle is always an ugly possibility.

Fully aware of the energy and effort needed to wage war against a determined and deranged foe, Egyptians were even ready to celebrate a lousy Hobson's Choice. It wasn't until the Egyptian military cut the balls off the Muslim Brotherhood's meager gains in order to further insulate themselves from the people's will, that riled another rally.

There is no doubt who remains in charge and that fact is bound to drive the next wave of rebellion. Should the final vote count mysteriously favors the stooge of the privileged, its on! Again!
