Issues Under Fire: So Russia and China Are BFF Now?

The Blood Flows Freely:

It looks like the bloody streets of Syria will remain soaked if Russia and China has to be relied upon to put the screws to Bashar al-Assad. Yucking it up in Beijing, Russia's Vladimir Putin and China's Hu Jintao are working deals, and making nice nice, much to the dismay of Washington and others in the West.

Like a couple of aging spouses renewing their vows, the Russians and Chinese appear to be more united than ever. And that unity will not be challenged over the civil war breaking out in Syria. Talk may be cheap, but its all China and Russia is willing to offer Syria people right now.

Stating China and Russia are making a positive contribution to efforts to tamp down violence long enough to establish former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's six point plan, these two BFFs remain adamant, that they'll not back any efforts involving military intervention. With the Russian leader planning to meet Iran's Ahmadinejad and Afghanistan' Karzai as part of a regional security summit on Wednesday and Thursday, it appears Putin is making a very public show of Russia flexing its regional muscle and leadership.

Later this week, this new "dynamic duo" will hook up with leaders attending the annual summit of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation, a group comprised of of Russia, China and four other Central Asian states seeking to gain strength in numbers and through cooperation.

If Russia, China and the Shanghai Co-operation Organization's primary goal to reduce Western influence in their neck of the woods, it looks like they're well on their way to achieving that objective. At this stage of the game, Russia and China are holding better cards and the West may be forced to fold this hand.
