Obama Vs. Romney, Whose the Smartest?
With the global economy in tatters, the Middle East/North Africa heating up, Israel provoking Iran, while China and Japan size each other up for a long overdue showdown, the U.S. needs the smartest guy it can get to be in charge.
Believe it or not, it only took a cursory review of both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to determine who the smartest guy is in a head to head match up. When we recalled listening to the heartwarming accounts each of the candidate’s wives gave of their respective husbands during the conventions, we found it startling to realize how many obstacles President Obama had to overcome in his ascent to the highest, most respected and difficult job on the planet.
For an individual of mixed race in a overtly racially sensitive nation, with no father for guidance and meager financial resources (to put it mildly), Barack Obama’s achievements are more than remarkable, they’re “friggin” miraculous. Being thinking people, we have little faith in miracles these days, hence we must subject our analysis to the probability of President Obama’s raw intellect playing a significant role in his overall success to date.
Luck notwithstanding, Barack Obama had to be pretty damn slick to pull off what he’s done so far. Additionally, it must have taken a great deal of wit, street smarts, charm, cleverness, inner strength, perseverance, determination, self sacrifice and dogged ambition to reach his plateau.
On the other hand, Mitt Romney through no fault of his own, arrived in this world with privileges, connections, influence, the right bloodline and a good solid name for opening doors traditionally closed to people of Barack Obama’s lineage. Unfortunately for Mr. Romney, these facts make it difficult to evaluate how he would have faired in life were he limited to the scarce resources President Obama had to make due with.
To date, the totality of Mitt Romney’s achievements is that of a successful businessman. Sure one can tout his stint as Governor of Massachusetts, but since he’d like America to forget what he achieved as a Governor, we’re not going to award Mr. Romney many points for that. While many will argue all Harvard graduates are smart, we must recognize the very different paths Barack Obama and Mitt Romney took to get there.
Mr Romney’s path to Harvard came free of “money worries” and solid letters of recommendation from prominent members of the "Who’s Who" crews while Barack Obama’s path was through competing for scholarships and student loans.
In our humble analysis, Barack Obama was smart enough to parlay virtually nothing into everything. By any stretch of the imagination, that wasn’t exactly easy. Conversely, Mitt Romney just got a little richer. Okay, a lot richer. But when you really think about it, how hard could that have been? BTW, by two to one when polled, most Americans think Obama could kick Romney’s ass in a fight! Hey, Just Sayin’!
