Charisma, youthful, strong military resume, money and an attractive message to feed a weary people and you've got the makings of popular candidate in any country. In Israel, that description fits the Jewish Home Party's Naftali Bennett to a (T) ea Party. Only, this guy is smart! (a former commando in the elite counter-terrorism unit, Sayeret Matkal, who built a web company and sold it for $145 million)
Voting in Israel is taking place as we post and early predictions indicate the far Right Wing candidate Bennett will do quite well. Too well, for many hoping to save the possibility of realizing the two state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
While the current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to retain his position, he'll not secure enough seats in the Israeli Knesset to form a governing coalition without cutting a deal with a devil even more devilish than himself. With a bad economy and fighting off accusations of flunking for the wealthy, Mr. Netanyahu could use a rabid zionistic expansionist type like Bennett to run interference for his heretofore failed economic policies.
If the Israelis could only expand their space, they could expand their economy. If Israel can expand it's economy, it can at least temporarily, quite complaints of the outrageous cost of living in the tiny nation. Unfortunately, there's the small problem of a few million Arabs and Palestinians, that for the moment, still occupy the space needed for that much needed expansion.
These people will have to be dealt with and Mr. Bennett has a plan to do just that. According to all the data we've gathered and to confirm thus far, Mr. Bennett and his ilk favors the annexation of most of the West Bank and permanently renaming the area Judea and Samaria for all the world to accept. There is no plan to continue the farce of negotiating for peace. There is no reason to continue efforts towards the two state solution. The Jewish Home Party's position is clear. The contested land has always belonged to Israel and its time that Israel took it back for good.
Since there is little doubt how the United States will respond to what could be the most provocative Israeli government action yet, its the international community, the Palestinians, and Egyptians who'll determine how quickly the region heats up as Israel signals the testing of their new boundaries.
This could be a Golden Dawn moment for the Israeli people if only the world would just look the other way.
