Last week it was reported that Al Jjazeera was in the process of purchasing Current TV. This story then generated conversations concerning what Al Jazeera's style of journalism brings to the media marketplace and the value the international audience is deriving from it.
After reviewing and analyzing Al Jazeera's coverage of President Obama selecting former Senator Chuck Hagel as his Secretary of Defense and comparing it to what Americans got from domestic media outlets, it left little wonder why US citizens have no clue of what's going on beyond its borders.
From the depth of commentary, to the unvarnished reporting of why Senator Hagel was such a controversial choice in the first place, we found interesting angles and alternative points of views that ultimately opened our eyes to even more newsworthy paths of interest.
We eventually found ourselves exploring the Israeli political process, the rise of Israeli extremism, Israel's special brand of Democracy and how it curiously differs from the American experience. It became clear, the American media consumer has either been dummied down to the such an extent that it sees no value nor have any interest in international/foreign affairs, or its a market simply being purposely under served.
This, in our opinion is extremely dangerous. When Congress conducts themselves like automatons in legislating foreign policy that will determine whom America condones and whom America condemns, it is imperative Americans know who their real friends are. It is for this reason, we will focus our attention on the upcoming Hagel confirmation hearings in conjunction with the Israeli elections with great interest. Somehow, we think the questions Senator Hagel will be asked to answer will be just as telling ask his responses.
With all the talk of America's special relationship with Israel and how slavish U.S. support should remain, we want to verify the Israel America once knew and loved, hasn't morphed into something loathsome. Since Americans have heretofore been vilified for even broaching this topic with any vigor, we're going to invest the time and energy into peeling away the many layers of ignorance that shroud and cloud clearer perspectives. Hey, we're just amplifying the whispers!
