Firstly, welcome back!
Although some in Washington and the inernational community would rather have another week to pull the covers over their heads before letting go of summer, the issues currently plaguing the world just won't wait that long. The lead up to this fall has been hotter than its been in many moons.
When we left in a huff for our annual summer break, we reminded our visitors to remain wary of US based media services and outlets, as in our view, the coverage of the Edward Snowden "summer blockbuster" was being artificially sweetened by said media services for purposes still left to be uncovered.
Since the Snowden crisis has been placed on hold while President Obama focuses his "public attentions" on Syria's Basha al-Assad, we're rolling with the president to make sure the alternative angles to the Syrian crisis gets a fair airing. However, on the down-low, we'll be keeping the Snowden saga alive as long as Edward Snowden can remain so.
Government by the Pepole, What a concept
Lacking global confidence and international credibility, world leaders are putting the issue of military intervention in Syria before their people. Save for the French, the Brits, the Germans and Canadians have all distanced themselves from committing to another US sponsored coalition of aggressors. The Russians and the Chinese have been more forceful and direct, calling the US evidence suspect at best and outright bull shit in the parlance of the average causal observer.
This is a positive trend, as the British Parliament hung Prime Minister David Cameron out to dry in his bid to back President Obama, the French Parliament reviewed the evidence, found it not to be all that convincing and have scheduled further debate over the issue. And now, President Obama goes to Congress for something presumably the war powers act allows him to do without Congressional approval.
At this stage of the conflict, it appears the world would rather await the findings of the U.N. chemicals weapons inspectors before assigning any blame or taking any action. All the delays, missteps and confusion is rooted in one fact and one fact only. The U.S. is operating on a deficit of trust.
Because of past administration's lies that led to disastrous results, no one can rely too heavily upon any claims made by the U.S. government. Like it or not, this is a reality the United States will face in times of crisis until that trust can be reestablished. That could be decades, if not longer.
While President Obama may be forced to take action due to his unique commitment to the Israeli government, the rest of the world has no such burden to consider. More on this tomorrow.
