Will Barack Obama Snub Iran's Hassan Rouhani and the Syrians at U.N. General Assembly
With all the trouble and expense it takes to secure a city like New York, one would think Barack Obama would use the annual event wisely by meeting with those the Unitesd States has major issues with. Yet, the President has no plans to spend time with Hassan Rouhani of Iran or Bashar al-Assad's reps of Syria.
With recent positive overtures made by these embittered and embattled nations to establish dialog, it would be smart to set aside current protocols of no public contact and return the gesture. This is a missed opportunity. This is a mistake. This makes no sense. Maybe the Israelis won't allow a meeting between Barack Obama and their regional enemies.
After all, the Israelis have the most to gain if Iran continues to suffer and Syria continues its chaotic collapse. Conversely, Israel has the most to lose if Iran moderates is image and rhetoric and Syria voluntarily disarm and disavow the use or transfer of chemical weapons. Without the Iranians or Syrians accepting their assigned roles of global pariahs, the U.S.-Israeli Union will be left without any boogymen to frighten the world with. This is an issues for major a discussion.
