Issues Under Fire: 2014 Year of the Refugee

Kid Killer or Both

Considering their number is predicted to challenge the world's capacity for humanitarian aid, 2014 could very well be the year of the refugee.
With few nations financially prepared to absorb the cost of hosting men women and children by the hundreds of thousands flooding borders, many are turing their backs to the problem. Some are turning their backs for legitimate reasons. Some of the refugees could be screwy! Don't be alarmed, it'll all be explained.
Although most domestic and international security assessments highlight the threat of terrorist incubating within the ranks of the refugees, few focus on the dangers of the screwiest among them. Some of these people have never known peace, let alone quiet. Depending upon where the refugee is running from, they may have spent most, if not all their lives without a country to call home.
The mental stresses many have been exposed to are so devastating, to expect a sound functioning mindset to emerge is a bit much to expect. The life the refugee flees is chaotic and crazy to say the least. In an environment where only the fit will survive, those who made it to relative safety (a refugee camp) may have committed some regrettable acts to ensure that relative safety. Who knows the dark past and deep secrets these people are tormented with. The refugee could actually be the poster child for PTSD.
No matter where the refugee comes from, if they qualify as a refugee, they've got serious issues and they need a lot of help. They've all lived through horrific conditions, saw barbaric acts of violence and experienced unimaginable traumas. For many, the only friend in the world they can claim is hunger. Were it not for hunger, many wouldn't even know they were still alive. Shit like that takes a toll.
The United States seems acutely aware of the mental problems that could plague "the refugee". Opting to provide billions in global humanitarian aid as opposed to offering resettlement opportunities, keeps the screwy refugees at bay. After all, how many communities in the United States would actually welcome a refugee camp.
These are hard times and people who've suffered like this for an extended period of time generally have difficulties adjusting to normal surroundings. PTSD must be running rampant among the camps and detention centers around the world. The cost to identify, segregate and provide effective treatment  for a screwy is incalculable, to say nothing of the political nightmare it would involve trying to provide that level of humanity to perfect strangers.
Without knowing the real story behind the desperate faces with dwindling hope huddling together under a canvas tent, the next mass murdered, deranged rapist, psychotic killer or worse, could be one flashback away from revealing his mental issues.
Bottom line: While governments strain to provide jobs and public services for their own people, the sudden influx of a bunch of potentially dangerous screwy types could easily and quickly overwhelm a nation with substantial resources. A nation struggling to feed its own could easily and quickly break under the pressure.
