A World Wide Search for the American Dream
Traveling the globe in search of the American Dream has been fun, exciting, eye-poppingly enlightening and quite depressing all at the same time. So far, we've seen lives being lived in fashions many Americans can only fantasize about, no matter how hard and long they work. From 35 hour work weeks with guaranteed health benefits and decent wages, to those enjoying jobs with so many paid vacation days per year, it would stagger the average American worker's imagination, we witnessed it all.
Although the original mission was to find out who stole the American Dream and how Americans can get it back, our angle has changed a bit as we immerse ourselves in the lifestyles of those we're studying. However, before this challenging effort can yield accurate results, Berlin, Moscow and Hong Kong will need as much attention as we've given Paris.
That means more tight seats on budget airlines and tiny hotel rooms to contend with. Unfortunately, there is no other way to get a true feel for how the world works, other than looking at it up close and personal.
Still, preliminary evidence indicates the real mystery to be solved, is how the United States has been able to convince the American worker they remain the envy of the world.
While Issues under Fire will return Monday 05.19.2014, we'll be in and out over the summer in order to solve that mystery. As you know, we don't like mysteries here. In the meantime, we've got a cool episode of Philip Marlowe entitled The Hard Way Out. Enjoy and share!
