Issues Under Fire: Karachi Airport Attack Says Taliban Has Reach and Bench Strength
Apparently the Taliban has its own ideas on how and when the Afghanistan war will end. Just because the US has announced the date of its planned departure, doesn't mean an end to the fighting. Conducting violent operations almost at will, Pakistani Taliban militants gave security forces all they could handle and more, storming Karachi's Jinnah International Airport, killing and wreaking havoc.
To say this war is coming to an end is a stretch at best. Like Iraq, Afghanistan will continue to bleed as long as sectarian divides and tribal differences continue to be resolved with car bombs and suicide attacks. There is absolutely nothing the United States can do to change that reality, and it never could!
As soon as Western influence has abated, the Taliban will have a way of life to return to and preserve. If that means killing the next Afghanistan president to eliminate a Western backed puppet, they will keep trying until they've done so. If that means little girls will no longer be going to school, little girls will no longer be going to school. If that means providing a safe haven, support and training to other violent extremist elements who'll eventually fan out across the world, thats what will happen.
Be advised, this is not an argument to remain in Afghanistan one minute longer than President Obama has indicated "to date." These are merely statements of fact and conclusions born out by prevailing conditions on the ground, as well the history of the Afghan people.
Watching the administration spin a credible tale to fend off GOP criticism of the Bowe Bergdahl-Tailban prisoner exchange will be interesting this week. As the Taliban continue to ramp up the violence, it will be tough to convince Americans and the international community, that this was the right time to make such a deal.
Bottom line: No matter what anybody tells you, the United States no longer win wars or even end wars. The United States just changes the channel.
