Issues Under Fire: Stench of the Bergdahl Spin Lingers

Watching Rice Spin

The Stench of the Bergdahl Spin Lingers

You might not think political spin has an odor, but it does. As National Security Advisor Susan Rice must know by now, political spin can stink to high heaven if not handled professionally. Apparently making an effort to "pull a fast one" on the nation over the Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl fairy tale, this rank amateur of  message manipulation got caught tripping over her own words while talking fast and saying nothing.

Having a well documented proclivity for being "imprecise", one would think the good Dr. would have done her homework, paid closer attention during briefings and if need be, verify three times or more from trusted sources, any murky details. After all, that's where the devil hangs out. Instead, Susan Rice came prepared to deliver a story line, but when grilled by a professional, she could only default to making up stories.

In an age when details can be confirmed or dispelled in the blink of an eye, it would have been a good idea to be prepared to say things like; "the facts are still developing" or some of the details remain unclear or, use that old standby; "I'll have to get back to you on that one later". These days, at the slightest whiff of foul play, the curious amongst us will be looking for the asshole responsible for causing the big stink. Clearly, double talk is simply not Dr. Rice's forte.

Hoping the blowback would dissipate like a fart in a hurricane, much to the Obama administration's horror, this story has lingered like a real cheek flapper in a small elevator. At the painfully slow speed this story keeps rising, we may be holding our noses for quite awhile.

Bottom line: Something smelled awfully funny about this story from the very beginning. Unfortunately, for Barack Obama's National Security Advisor, there's absolutely nothing funny about it.
