Issues Under Fire: US Acknowledge Providing Lethal Support to Syrian Rebels
Stating, the US is the single largest contributor of humanitarian assistance, providing over 1.7 billion in aid, National Security Advisor Susan Rice went on to say, "That’s why the United States has ramped up its support for the moderate vetted opposition, providing lethal and non-lethal support where we can to support both the civilian opposition and the military opposition,” in an interview with a CNN reporter.
While this new "public" stance on stepping up US involvement in Syria's civil war escaped media scrutiny due to the Bowe Bergdahl blowback, it's a good bet, this story is just waiting for its fifteen minutes of fame. Whatever new calculus has been employed to determine why now is the time admit to strengthening Bashar al-Assad's opposition, requires a serious explanation. Could it be just another distraction or perhaps just another routine blunder in the making? Inquiring minds want to know!
Considering heretofore, the administration has maintained there is no military solution to the Syrian civil war, suddenly admitting the United States has involved its self in Syria's conflict, (albeit modestly, as far as we know) is a bit jolting. Since any foreign policy rooted in common sense would only provide military aid to an opposition that has a reasonable chance of achieving its goals, it seems odd the United States would place lethal arms in the hands of those having no hope, let alone a pray.
Presuming the Syrian opposition's goal is to defeat a Syrian military backed by Iran, Hezbollah and Russia, to dislodge Bashar al-Assad from power, to hang him and all his cronies in the middle of Damascus, the US must be hooking the rebels up with some serious Sh*t. To think weak, poorly trained and out numbered rebel fighters can do all that, while taking on an array of foreign militants determined to slice off a chunk of Syria for themselves, is an asinine prospect at best.
Bottom line: We've said before and we're saying now; to arm the Syrian opposition without absolute confidence said opposition had a fighting chance to prevail, is to lure "a brave, but misguided resistance force" to a certain and bloody death. Podcast Below!
