Issues Under Fire: U.S. Led Proxy War Rages in Syria

US Russia Iran Proxy War in Syria Acknowledged but Undeclared

Now that the United States has admitted providing lethal aid to the Syrian opposition, one could reason the Obama administration has entered the conflict; albeit unofficially. Since its no big secret Russia and Iran have been providing military aid and support for Bashar al-Assad's government, one could reason Russia and Iran have entered the conflict; albeit unofficially.

One could also reason, intervention by any outsiders, providing tools of war for goals not clearly in the interest of the Syrian people is tantamount to conducting a proxy war. At this stage of the conflict, the West and to a significant degree, other regional powers are simply using the Syrian people to fight their fights.

If you can accept this line of reasoning, the next logical leap would be to determine who is winning this proxy war between the US, Russia and Iran. By all accounts, to date Bashar al-Assad has the upper hand. Despite the opposition's access to lethal weapons and CIA training for same, as well as a plethora of foreign fighters breaching his porous borders, al-Assad's government forces is still bombing the hell out of all comers, while taking and holding more ground daily.

For what its worth, Bashar al-Assad did manage to conduct and win an election. While the international community rightly called the elections a sham, at least Bashar al- Assad checked off that box. When you consider the Syrian government's offer of amnesty to thousands jailed for joining the "terrorist", it looks as though al-Assad is now waging a reasonably effective public relations campaign.

In short, it appears Bashar al-Assad has a plan and support and they're both working well for him. On the other hand, if there is an upside to the Obama administration's efforts to support the Syrian opposition, it has yet to be seen.

Bottom line: No matter how you cut it, engaging Syria in any military capacity will only lead to the same US led mess left in Iraq and the same US led mess about to be left in Afghanistan. Podcast Below!
