Issues Under Fire: Lights Bombed Out in Gaza, US Turns Blind Eye

Day 23 of the Assault on Gaza: Just when you thought the situation in Gaza could get no worse, Israel blows the sole power plant servicing 1.8 million civilians to smithereens. Setting the frail facility ablaze, Gaza officials estimate, it could be a full year before service is restored. Since the plant's primary function is to help pump fresh water, treat sewage and provide power for medical facilities, residents of Gaza will soon be rationing water, while performing emergency surgeries and shitting in buckets by candlelight.

Meanwhile, as the body count in Gaza explodes beyond 1200, (mostly women and children) the US' Secretary of State bowed to Israeli pressure for suggesting a proposed ceasefire agreement without Israel's permission. The very idea Kerry would recommend a proposal that considered even the most basic of Palestinian concerns was a non starter. To acknowledge Palestinian suffering is an unforgivable and punishable act of disloyalty.

Castigated harshly and publicly, the Israelis have let it be known, the US has but one role to play in "Operation Protective Edge"; bankroll the mission and stay on message or just STFU. Stuttering and stammering through another agonizingly awkward pledge of allegiance, John Kerry humbly made clear, his intentions were strictly in the interest of Israel's security. Obviously scrambling for a narrative to camouflage the US' inability to stand up to Israel, Kerry's pathetic display of servitude was so apparent, its unlikely he'll ever make the mistake of uttering another independent thought again.

But wait, it gets worse! When State Department spokesperson Marie Harf was aggressively queried by journalist as the to United States' position on Israel's six year blockade of the Gaza Strip, she too began babbling almost incoherently. Like her boss, the flunky in training struggled miserably  to convince reporters, that intense diplomatic efforts are being made to keep the parties focused on the broader issues of reaching a sustainable ceasefire and to remain committed achieving the all too illusive Two State Solution.

Bottom line: Although the Obama administration is fully aware of Israel's version of Jim Crow, apartheid, collective punishment for Palestinian resistance and now war crimes, the ugly fact is, the United States government is powerless to do anything about it. By week's end, projections indicate 500+ more civilians (mostly women and children) will be killed, with even more maimed and crippled. Yet, the United States will do nothing about that either.
