Issues Under Fire: Gaza Strip Ceasefire Announced, But What's it Worth?
Day 25 of the Assault on Gaza: Before we breakout the champaign, it should be noted, the "negotiators" are still talking past, around and over the heads of Hamas. To continue ignoring, demonizing and refusing to recognize Hamas as the legitimate democratically elected representatives of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, will only lead the conflicted parties right back to where they started. The US-Israeli Union, simply must accept Hamas for what they really are; the Palestinian resistance.
Unfortunately, this is the real world and the US-Israeli Union is currently incapable of adopting such a bold and progressive posture. Therefore, an immediate plan must be put in place to mitigate the continued slaughter of the innocent. A wise and humanitarian option would be to provide safe passage to all noncombatants from the battlefield. The weak and the meek must be given a safe-haven from the killing zones.
Since UN facilities, hospitals, schools and mosques are all considered legitimate targets in this conflict, (despite the spin in the media) all of Gaza is a battlefield and all Palestinians are legitimate targets too. Hence, it is imperative, women, children, the elderly, and the wounded be allowed to leave Gaza before hostilities resume. Understandably, this could be a logistical nightmare for an occupying force conducting a major military operation, but there are rules, even in war.
It was no secret, the Gaza Strip is the most densely populated area on earth before Israel began its assault. The US-Israeli Union had to know "Operation Protective Edge" would result in the carnage the world has been witnessing daily. Surly Israeli military strategist predicted and provided projections of the horrid eventualities. The only issue more disturbing than Israel's complete lack of regard for human life, is the United States providing Israel the weapons to snuff Palestinian lives out so efficiently.
Bottom line: If the US-Israeli Union truly considered the lives of Palestinians trapped in harms way through no fault of their own, more forethought would have been given to "Operation Protective Edge" before unleashing it so indiscriminately. If the US-Israeli Union were truly the beacons of humanity they proclaim to be, "Operation Protective Edge" would have been tempered with a proper measure of humanity. If the US-Israeli Union were truly seeking peace and an end to the occupation, "Operation Protective Edge" would have never been seriously considered in the first place.
