Issues Under Fire: Was Hamas Framed for John Kerry's Ceasefire Failure?
Day 28 of the Assault on Gaza: Due to the speed in which U.S. media outlets started reporting "official statements" and versions of events as facts, many surmised, they had to be either complicit in misleading the public or grossly incompetent at their jobs. Literally, within minutes of the ceasefire's reported collapse U.S. media outlets were referring to the failue as a game changing event. Hamas was the culprit. Israel can continue the killing spree. End of story! Well almost!
Later that same afternoon of day 25, President Obama took to the bully pulpit and did his level best to seal the Palestinian's fate by obediently echoing Israeli talking points. Like an AIPAC sock-puppet, Obama used those taking points to point the finger directly at Hamas. At no time during the President's press conference was there any mention of the fact that Hamas was disputing Israel's story. At no time during that press conference was any mention of an ongoing investigation of events. It was all Hamas!
However, before accepting U.S.-Israeli official statements, accounts and versions of how Hamas was completely at fault for violating the 72 hour humanitarian ceasefire, wiser observers were careful to wait, look and listen for the counter narrative. If the US-Israeli Union had its way, they'd have the world believe the Palestinian resistance in Gaza simply blew an opportunity to provide a well deserved respite from the hostilities.
Hamas Was Framed!
Considering there's always an alternative view, the more astute observer could see a frame forming around this story. A story painting a picture so perfectly and controlled so carefully, few would even bother to question its authenticity. The more the media reported, the more Hamas began to look like a classic patsy. And the frame almost fit, were it not for Hamas' plausible deniability, the U.S' zero credibility problem and Israel's worldwide reputation for deception.
In order to establish a foundation for reasonable speculation as to who was really responsible for the breakdown, it was necessary to determine who would benefit most by the ceasefire's failure. Unfortunately for the U.S.-Israeli Union, from what has shaken out during the last 72 hours, it appears the Israelis had everything to gain if the ceasefire failed. They can claim Hamas is the crazy aggressor, Hamas can't be trusted, Hamas should be held responsible for the deaths of Palestinians and thus, Israel has every right to continue defending itself.
On the other hand, Hamas had everything to lose and nothing to gain if the cease fire failed. Hamas risked losing the moral high ground. Hamas risked the world turning away in disgust. Hamas would have been foolish not to take a knee, catch a breath, assess the damage. The ceasefire would have allowed the resistance to bury the dead, tend the wounded and buy time for the militants to re-up and prepare for the next wave of violence. This narrative made more sense. Hamas may be a lot of things, but foolish, they are not?
Bottom line: It has become crudely obvious, the United States is not only useless, but actually dangerously problematic as a player in the process of achieving any cessation of violence or addressing the underlying issues preventing an equitable resolution to this crises. BTW, the big loser in this latest bush league fiasco is President Obama and his legacy
