Issues Under Fire: Israel Targets Apartment Buildings, Palestinians Eyes the ICC
Day 49 of the Assault on Gaza: While the Palestinian resistance spent the weekend rooting out rats and collaborators for quick trials and immediate punishment (public executions), the Israelis occupied its time targeting multi level apartment buildings for destruction. With the resistance identifying and eliminating as many as 22 snitches and Israel pancaking hundreds of residential units, one would think both sides would have been to busy to consider where this could all lead. Nothing could be further from the truth!
Apparently, Hamas had plenty of time to consider its next move in this battle of wills and desperation. Taking the bold and some would say dangerous step of supporting the PLO's bid to join the ICC (International Criminal Court), Hamas has signed off on an agreement that could expose itself to charges of war crimes along with Israel. Since indiscriminate rocket fire can be considered a criminal act of war, somebody in the resistance may have to take the fall in order to hold Israel accountable for its criminal acts.
Now that the Palestinian people have decided to remain united, even to the extent of sacrificing some of their own, they've become a major force in their own defense. If Mahmoud Abbas aka Abu Mazen is strong enough to face the heat and withstand the pressure the United States will undoubtedly exert upon him, the Palestinians have an excellent chance of striking a significant blow against Israel. With well over two thousand dead, over ten thousand wounded and hundreds of thousands left homeless and displaced, it would be a criminal act not to seek justice from the ICC.
One could say, Hamas' act of signing off on joining the ICC, can be seen as an act of courage and martyrdom. Conversely, one could say Hamas had nothing to lose by doing so. Its true, any individuals identified charged and convicted for war crimes will likely go to prison for a very long time. But if you think it through, those individuals are already living in a prison. When one is existing under an occupation a blockade and a siege, its difficult to see what other prison can be designed to feel worse.
Israel on the other hand, wants no part of being dragged into court to have its dirty laundry aired in public. Destined to take the brunt of the world's criticism and condemnation for war crimes and crime against humanity, Israel and the United States (the enabler) for that matter, would be facing a public relations nightmare, neither would recover from for generations. Not only would the war crimes be exposed, but the decades of lies, deceptions, broken agreements and strategic provocations would be laid bare for all to see once and for all.
Bottom line: Israel is going to need a legal defense and a damn good one at that. After watching  washed-up shyster Alan Dershowitz deliver a rather lame-ass justification for Israel's sadistic approach to war on CNN recently, insanity may be the only option. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could claim he had merely succumbed to the pressures of his people's relentless calls for blood. He could claim he couldn't resist his nation's degeneration into mob rule. He could claim he was a victim of his Right Wing Party's rage. Its a stretch perhaps, but insanity is all Israel has going for itself anymore.
