Issues Under Fire: Netanyahu's Show and Tell Fails to Justify Bloodbath

Day 2 of the Aftermath: Now that the dust has settled in the border towns of Gaza, the full impact of Israel's bad intentions can be seen seared on the face of every survivor. Stumbling through rubbish and scavenging for everything from tools to recyclables, stunned Palestinians are struggling to understand what the hell just happened. As international media outlets and bloggers around the world began broadcasting and streaming the horrid aftermath, Israel had to respond quickly and offensively.

Hastily calling a press conference to justify Israel's viciously merciless retaliation to relatively ineffective rocket fire, Benjamin Netanyahu came prepared with a video presentation to substantiate claims of Hamas firing from populated positions in the Gaza Strip. Not exactly a mountain of evidence, but it was enough to satisfy the IDF's protocol in such situations. When so much as a thrown rock can get the bejesus blasted out of anything that breaths, perhaps Hamas could have been more conscientious with weapons placement.

Still, when people find themselves in desperate situations, they react out of desperation. The Palestinian people are in a fight for their very lives. There is no going back this time. There is no tomorrow. What we are witnessing this summer in Gaza, is the Palestinian's Alamo. Unbeknown to most Americans, the Palestinians are facing a far more sinister foe than the fictional benevolent Israeli seeking only peace and quite.

Contrary to the image of brokenhearted Israelis lamenting the deaths of innocent civilians, as they agonize over their moral dilemma, is a psychotically crippled Right Wing majority committed to the death, occupation or mass deportation of every Palestinian to the far reaches of the earth. These sentiments are being driven by people like Retired Major General Giora Eiland, and former head of Israel's National Security Council. He penned an op-ed in the Ynet News, (during the height of hostilities) suggesting there were no innocents in Gaza. The General argued, that all the citizens of Gaza were as responsible for the recent violence as Hamas. By his assessment, every Palestinian is a legitimate target.

Moshe Felglin, Deputy Speaker of the Israeli Knesset and member of Prime Minister Netanyahu's Likud Party has a revealed his dastardly plan to eliminate the Palestinian problem once and for all. Mr. Felglin recommended ( during the height of hostilities) the complete conquest of the entire Gaza Strip and the annihilation of all fighting forces and their supporters. All others would be encouraged to accept compensation for deportation. Anyone still refusing to to leave their homes would be forced to publicly sign a declaration of loyalty to Israel and receive a blue ID card similar to that of the Arabs of East Jerusalem.

Bottom line: The prevailing debate occurring in Israel today is not over going to far, but over not going far enough. Until the voices of Israeli extremism are publicly acknowledged and forcefully challenged, Hamas, charged with defending the Palestinian people by any means available, would be foolish to allow themselves to be disarmed. After all, when your enemy threatens to destroy you, you have the right to defend yourself. Now where have we heard that one before?
