Unable to trust or rely on existing Syrian opposition fighters, the strategy of the Obama administration is to build a new Syrian rebel force from the ground up. The administration expects to identify, vet, train and equip at least five thousand Arab troops loyal only to the United States. Sounds crazy, but that's the plan!
According to U.S. Defense officials, after approximately 12-14 months, the first of these freshly trained proxy warriors should roll off the (brainwashing) assembly line ready for battle. Barack Obama's "Desert Rat Patrol's" first mission is reportedly to take the ground fight to ISIS/ISIL with heavy air support from the United States and regional allies. Sounds more like a movie plot than a viable option, but this is the current reality.
Apparently these new proxy warriors will need to be programmed to mindlessly follow orders and conduct missions designed to protect Western interest in the region. Its going to be interesting to see if such a creature will remain obedient when protecting Western interest conflicts with regional life, sectarian norms and tribal allegiances. Sounds more like science fiction than a credible course of action, but this is the best President Obama's National Security team could come up with on short notice.
Its going to be interesting to see how the Obama administration will recruit and assemble, essentially a flunky fighting force. How will U.S. military trainers keep this flunky fighting force motivated for the long haul? Are they going to be given the opportunity to be all they can be in the Middle East? Sounds a bit ridiculous, but likely true.
What else can these people be promised to fight on command? How will they be compensated? Do they get paid vacation days and healthcare benefits? How do you get them to remain committed when the collateral damage begins to mount. How to you keep them from going rogue or worse, turning their sites on the West? True, this sounds like a plan, unfortunately it sounds like a really bad one.
Bottom line: Based on the Obama administration's presentation of its way forward against ISIS/ISIL, its difficult to see anything but short term chaos and long term instability. Any fighting force developed and deployed by the West to prop up and support a government acceptable to the West, by definition is called regime change. One would think, we've been down this road too many times not to know better. Podcast Below!
