Issues Under Fire: The 21st Century: George Orwell Vs. George Jetson
The year is 2014 and we live in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation, dictated by a political system designed to maintain that status quo. After being warned by George Orwell's 1984 in 1949, how could we have allowed this future to come to fruition? How could Orwell have prophesied so accurately that our future would look more like his vision than what a George Jetson's world promised?
The future most envisioned for 2014 was a world that had solved many of today's pressing problems. Poverty, hunger, illiteracy, income inequality, population management, climate challenges and clean energy issues should have been concerns of the past. By now, most thought military conflicts would have become an outdated concept. Most just assumed the world would have evolved beyond socially divisive issues like racism, sexism, anti Semitism, religious intolerance and homophobia by now. My God, this is the 21st Century for crying out loud!
Those with real imaginations, saw people commuting to work in flying vehicles powered by an Eco-friendly energy source in 2014. Space travel for vacationers would not only be available, but affordable to the middle-class. By 2014, medical advances and universal access to healthcare would doubled one's life expectancy. With proper population management, a long, healthy and stress free life would be the norm for everybody.
Unfortunately, things just didn't work out that way. It appears, we're currently existing a slow tormenting hell. Whether it's a hell of our own making or some secret diabolical scheme by the world's evil elite to control the masses, is the most critical question of our time.
If the way we're living now is the result some dark conspiracy, believe it not, there's a slight chance to change the trajectory of the next 30 years. Generally, when most people recognize whose screwing them, they'll eventually get pissed enough to resist.

On the other hand, if "We the People" are to blame for what happened to our future, we're all in a lot of trouble. If our failed future was the result of years of of apathy and or willful ignorance, it means we are our own worst enemy. It means, no matter how much we think the worlds sucks today, the next generation's future will be infinitely worse than ours is.
Bottom line: In the 2014 midterm elections the America people will be courted by Democrats Republicans and Independent candidates desperately seeking their votes and support. But if none of those candidates have a positive vision and a viable plan to dramatically change the current path we're on, then no matter who the American people vote for, they'll be voting for the status quo.
