Issues Under Fire: China to Hong Kong: Stick to the Plan We Know Best
Were we tasked with advising China's Xi Jinping on how to deescalate tensions in Hong Kong, we'd recommend he let the so-called "Umbrella Revolution" know it is China's big Umbrella Plan that's got them covered. He be wise to calmly let Hong Kong citizens know China's future depends on all of China working as one.
While Hong Kong has made tremendous strides as an economic powerhouse, it should be reminded that that success is because Hong Kong is a part of something bigger than Hong Kong itself. President Xi could explain the rational behind providing prescreened candidates is to make sure political representatives will stick to the plan.
In order to ensure continued growth and prosperity for the masses, everyone has to remain on the same page. Having poorly vetted candidates deviating from core Chinese political protocols threatens unity. Since unity is one of the keys to China's success, political independence would only prove divisive and destructive.
The only reason Xi can make this pitch and make it stick, is because he has the trust of the majority. The only way to retain the trust of the majority is to deliver. So far, Xi has the has delivered. To date, China has a booming middle class, a strong economy, a reduction in corruption and a bright future for the masses.
Avoiding military engagements by pushing for political solutions, when it comes to international conflicts, Xi maintains the "We mind Our Own Business" approach. Sticking to this plan, leaves more resources for homeland improvements instead of homeland security.

Xi would also be wise to dissuade Hong Kong's youth to reject the U.S. model of Democracy. Considering U.S. political candidates are also selected and vetted by special interest prior to being placed on a ballot, its difficult to see how China's system is any less democratic.

Bottom line:  If Xi and mainland China's plan wasn't working or showed signs of weakness, Hong Kong's malcontents would have stronger long term support. Unfortunately, as it stands now, if Xi plays his cards right, the silent majority will convince Hong Kong students how much worse things could get and heard them back to classes. Besides, if they remain defiantly committed to change, they can always be shot later. Move along folks, there's nothing more to see here. Podcast Below!
