Issues Under Fire: In Rare Unvarnished Response, U.S. Condemns Israeli Settlements
Givat Hamatos, sounds more like a dish to avoid in a Mexican joint than a major point of contention in the most contentious space on earth. But this East Jerusalem neighborhood could be a flash point for another flare up between Israel and those who still retain a modicum of respect the rule of international law.
In a rare unvarnished response to the announcement of more than 2600 new settlement units, US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, "the development would make world nations question Israel’s ultimate commitment to a peaceful negotiated settlement with Palestinians."
“This development will only draw condemnation from the international community, distance Israel from even its closest allies, poison the atmosphere not only with the Palestinians but also with the very Arab governments with which Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu said he wanted to build relations,”.
No doubt these are tough words, but in reality they're unlikely to dissuade the far Right leaning Benjamin Netanyahu from moving forward. Feeling the heat from losing the war with Hamas this summer, the rattled Prime Minister had to do something to chill out his far far far Right critics.
The best way for Netanyahu to re-ingratiate himself with hardcore elements amongst his crumbling coalition, is to just to grab as much land as possible before Israel is forced to face any real challenges. If he can somehow keep the world's attention focused on Iran and regional strife, he can rely on Israel's loyal minions in the U.S. Congress to keep the Obama administration pinned down.
Bottom Line: When it comes to condemnation, no nation state has faced more of it internationally than the so called state of Israel. Not only can Israelis live with condemnation, but at times they actually invite it. Without some serious strings being attached to any future military and or monetary support for this insufferable leech, the Israeli's racist, apartheid-like management of the occupied territories will only continue to expand.
