Issues Under Fire: 2014 Midterm Elections Results and The Morning After!
While Democrats lament their loses and begin the process of understanding what could have been done to mitigate the damage, the wisest minds amongst the Party will conclude, it was all about integrity. The Democrats had none. The Democrats had strategies, angles, tactics and a sophisticated ground game, but they failed to approach the 2014 election cycle with a unifying message based on integrity.
When Kentucky Senate wannabe Alison Grimes refused to admit she'd voted for Barack Obama and tried to distance herself from the President's policies, a lot of people saw a cunning and cowardice at work. Grimes looked like a politician trying to thread a needle.
African Americans, still heavily supporting the President and his policies found Grimes' efforts to rebrand herself as a Clinton Democrat to be insultingly transparent. They could see they were being used. There simply wasn't enough voters sufficiently conned, to bother swapping Mitch McConnell for Alison Grimes, when the net result is just another scummy politician.
Moving across the country, the story seemed to be the same. In Louisiana, Mary Landrieu, failing to garner 51%, now facing a runoff, made a point of distancing herself from Barack Obama on healthcare and energy policy. Red State Democrats lacked the guts and fortitude to stand firm on their fundamental principals. The same could be said for Charlie Crist's loss in Florida against incumbent governor Rick Scott, albeit slightly different.
While Crist represented Democrat's brand admirably, when one looks at his background, one will find a Democrat, a Republican and an Independent staring back at them. Even fully embracing Obama's agenda, Crist seemed more like a political opportunist than a man of principals. Simply because he's standing with Democrats today don't mean he'll be with them tomorrow.
When Democrats across the nation began abandoning the President and anything he represented, they looked like rats jumping ship. The Party appeared to be moving on. 2016 is on the horizon, the President is now considered a dead duck and the professional politicos are positioning themselves for their futures. Not a damn thing has changed.
Whatever Barack Obama stood for, has now been deemed toxic. Affordable healthcare, a cleaner environment, addressing income inequality, access to a quality 21st century education and a sound social safety net will all be revisited at the speed of congress. Imperceptible! Save for the President's veto pen and what puny executive orders he can muster, his agenda is finished and his days are numbered. The vulture class can hardly wait.
One could argue, "We the People" spoke and the loses were bound to occur no matter what the Democrats tried to do to retain control of the U.S. Senate. But to see the Upper Chamber of Congress lost to the GOP, because some dastardly dastards were too self interested to remain loyal to core Democrat principals and fight for them to the better end was disgusting to observe.
Bottom line: Those grounded in character and integrity always battle moving forward, never running away. If you've got to lose, lose with dignity. Nobody respects scum bag politicians. As a result of the loss, the bickering will continue, the gridlock will continue, ignoring the needs of the people will continue, kowtowing to special interest will continue and the phony divisive social issues will continue.
