Issues Under Fire: Isolated by International Community, Israel Pressured to End Occupation
Hidden behind the headlines, Israel is collapsing under unprecedented world pressure to end the occupation. In the aftermath of Israel's 50 day assault on Gaza, the Palestinians have unified and solidified its governing bodies to speak as one. The Palestinian Authority have remained as restrained as possible under strained circumstances in confronting Israel's relentless settlement expansion and aggression. Working the world's body politic masterfully, the P.A. finally got their message out and the international community responded.
Once the world got a glimpse of what its like to be a Palestinian under Israeli control, it would no longer stand idly by. Following Sweden, the parliaments of the U.K. France, Spain and Denmark in quick succession voted to recognize Palestine as a State of its own. While that vote is as symbolic as the new Palestinian State's borders are virtual, it's clear, what follows will be intended to constrain Israel's plans for expansion. So, its game on!
While Israel struggles to market its message of "go away, we can handle this ourselves" the Palestinians have successfully urged the international community to take the next logical steps in reviving the intentionally stalled peace process. When the Palestinians show up at the U.N this week, they'll have more than their hats in their hands this time. They're armed with a reasonable plan and the international support to back them up.
Working through the Jordanians, the Palestinian Authority will seek a U.N. Resolution calling for an end to the occupation within two years. The draft legislation gives Israel two years to remove its forces from lands occupied since 1967. After that, more than likely, its on to the ICC. Hardly anything Israel can take lying down, its only hope at this juncture, is to lean heavily on the United States for blockage of any efforts to support the Palestinians with its veto power on the U.N. Security Council.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must be watching these event with great concern as Israel appear powerless to shape them anymore. With his government in shambles and his approval ratings tanking faster than the Russian ruble, Netanyahu's ultra Right policies has Israel teetering on the precipice of its long overdue Waterloo.
Considered by many as to have driven themselves drunk with power and totally out of control, the international community has concluded its time to intervene. Whether it was the vicious assault on Gaza this summer or the proposed "Jewish State Bill" this fall, clearly the tiny rogue regime has gone to far Right to remain even remotely rational. With the region red hot with hate, incendiary elements among Israel's radical Right will only exacerbate regional strife, so they have to be stopped now.
Although the United States has pledged its undying support for the problematic entity, we think its time to throw Israel under the bus where it belongs. If the United States is ever going to assert its independence, to regain its self respect, there will never be a better opportunity than the one presenting itself now. The world is moving on and so should the United States. The Israelis are facing a bleak future of their making and there's no upside to facing it with them.
Bottom line: Since the U.S.-Israeli Union has outgrown its usefulness, any further support for the borderline apartheid-like regime will only continue to erode America's stated values and reinforce the world's view of the United States as being Israel's flunky for hire. Podcast Below!
