Issues Under Fire: U.S. War Criminals Changing Vacation Plans
As the debate rages over the release of the now infamous "CIA Torture Report", some U.S. officials are openly worried about traveling abroad. Concerned some nations make view their actions to be in violation of international law, George W. Bush and his former crew are shaking shitless over the real possibility of being detained in certain places around the world for criminal prosecution.
While the likes of Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Alberto Gonzales, Michael Hayden and a host of others may currently enjoy immunity from justice, that immunity effectively ends at American shores. A mere scant review of the heavily redacted account of what went down post 9/11, reveals enough documented evidence to indict these people on some extremely serious charges. And war crimes and crimes against humanity tops the list.
Even before this report was released, as far back as 2011, Amnesty International had called on Canadian authorities to arrest and prosecute George W. Bush for war crimes during a planned visit to that country. Bush also was forced to canceled a trip to Switzerland as he faced similar calls for his arrest there. Amnesty's case against the former president was built on evidence obtained from public records, U.S. documents, a Red Cross report highly critical of the U.S.'s war on terror policies as well as Bush's own memoirs.
In complete defensive and damage control mode, former officials are trying desperately to muddy the waters, point fingers and mitigate complicity by talking to any cable news outlet that'll book them for comments. Taking refuge behind cunningly crafted and uniquely customized laws to permit some of the most egregious acts of torture, to a person, principal players must remain staunch defenders of the CIA's sadistic program of enhanced interrogation.
Imagine YouTube videos of former CIA director George Tenet being cuffed at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris or Donald Rumsfeld being spirited away by Spanish authorities after landing at Barcelona's El Prat to face charges. Somewhere in the world, there is a list naming the all the culprits and their alleged crimes. Those mentioned above and many more know this and have reason to fear their futures.
Legacies and reputations are on the line now. George W. Bush and company could go down in history listed along side Pol Pot, leader of the Khmer Rouge or Chili's General Augusto Pinochet. The world is pissed and no one in the international community appear to be in mood for forgivness. Talk about a reversal of fortunes. If they'd only realized, the law of retribution can never be repealed.
Bottom line: Barack Obama may have taken a lot of flack for not acting sooner or tougher, but under the circumstances, the timing of releasing this horrid tale is a stroke of genious. With Senate Democrats taking a back seat in January, this report would have never seen the light of day in the 114th Congress.
Not only does the President clear the nation's slate by exposing America's dirtiest secrets, but he shoves a stake in the heart of the GOP as he prepares to leave the world stage. Barack Obama may not have been able to lock these bastards up for their crimes, but this "lame duck" president has effectively locked them in. Podcast Below!
