Issues Under Fire: Benjamin Netanyahu
Given the monumental issues facing the world today, its unusual to have an individual take first prize for troublemaking. But lately, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been making a worldwide nuisance of himself. Like an obnoxious uninvited guest, demanding to be the center of attention, Netanyahu has worn out his international welcome, as he relentlessly seizes opportunities to link every world crisis to the trials and tribulations of Israel and or the Jewish people.
As if bogarting his way into the United States Congress to force his views upon the American people wasn't rude, arrogant or disrespectful enough, Netanyahu has spent the last few weeks insulting all of Europe by encouraging all Jews to come to their true home. Citing an uptick in anti- Semitic violence, Benjamin Netanyahu keeps blathering on about how Israel is only place on earth Jewish people will be safe.
While its true, France has been experiencing an unusual amount of anti-semitic activity, the French take the responsibility of protecting "all" of its citizens as seriously as any nation on the planet. For the brusque, ill mannered and tackless Netanyahu to intimate otherwise was less than appropriate to say the least. To make such unwise and unwarranted remarks while on French soil was a slap in the face.
This second plea for Jewish migration following the Copenhagen incident really pissed Francois Hollande of France off as he said "I will not just let what was said in Israel pass, leading people to believe the Jews no longer have a place in Europe. German chancellor Angela Merkel responded by saying, her government is doing everything possible to protect Jewish sites.
John Mann, chair of Britain's Parliamentary committee against anti-Semitism stated "The comments are not helpful and I think people will ignore them...We're not prepared to tolerate a situation in this country or any country in Europe where any Jews feel they have to leave."
No stranger to politicizing the tragedy of terror, Benjamin Netanyahu seems to be stooping even below his normal crude, coarse and offensive modus operandi to make a point or gain an edge. Injecting these divisive statements into the international narrative while Europe battles a spreading evil the world has yet to fully understand is not only counter productive but they're highly incendiary.
Bottom line: If the Israeli people want any hope of making progress toward peace or a chance to salvage what's left of a horrible regional and international reputation, they'd do themselves a favor by electing new, fresh, open-minded and forward thinking leadership. The thought of Israel regurgitating this political bile for the world to digest again is sickening. Podcast Below!
