Issues Under Fire: Iran-P5+1 Talks Continue Under Cone of Silence
With virtually no news slipping out of the talks, other than the usual bits and bites shared on the run from weary diplomats entering or leaving a secured conference room, hotel lobby or waiting transportation, anything being reported for the time being, is just jibber jabber. Actually, if these Iran-P5+1 talks are going to have any chance of success, they can only continue under a cone of silence.
Save for Iran's nuclear negotiator Hamid Baidinejad telling Iranian television that "drafting the final deal has started", no further details were given. On the other side of the table, Russia's deputy Foreign Minster, Sergey Ryabkov told reporters, Moscow will urge the lifting of an arms embargo against Iran during today's scheduled talks about Iran's nuclear program. Beyond that, not a peep.
Smartly, all participants have enacted a self imposed gag order to keep opponents of the negotiations at bey. Until a finished product can be achieved and announced by June 30th, it seems mums the word.
Generally, its when tensions flare up or an impasse has been reached, that one or more parties will loosen their tongues to get an edge in the media. One can only presume progress in being made, since there's been no leaks or angry tweets in the last 48 hours.
Still, Secretary of State John Kerry and Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will likely meet for a little side chit chat during the five-year review conference on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty at the U.N. April 27- May 22. Considering Secretary Kerry is prone to misspeaking or witlessly blurting out slightly less than factual statements from time to time, there's always an opportunity for a very public spat to develop. And, you came bet the farm, this observer will be watching. But until then, one can only patiently wait.
BTW, there's another podcast of Rocky Jordan just below entitled "Dilemma" for your enjoyment. For newcomers to RetroVision Media, Friday's we break from the global drama, for some classic radio programming. Rocky Jordan is an action and adventure seeking expat making a living the slick way in Cairo Egypt as a club owner and part time professional problem solver.
In this episode, when a couple of Egyptian creeps set up residence outside Rocky's spot, the Club Tambourine, he thinks a quick bums rush will solve his problem. Unfortunately, these are no ordinary bum types. Enjoy and share the adventure.
