Issues Under Fire: Monitoring Bipartisan Assault on Iran-P5+1 Deal
By now, President Obama should be under no illusions about how hard the GOP will fight against any efforts to solidify a deal with Iran. The fact that the threat of Iran's ability to develop a nuclear bomb will be reduced to nearly nil precent with intrusive monitoring, is meaningless to those who've pledged to derail any efforts this President pursues domestically or internationally. While the GOP has enough hate to sabotage a deal, they don't have enough votes.
Hence, the GOP is not the President's biggest threat going forward. The biggest threat the President will face in this stage of the process, is Israeli loyalist like Democrat Sen. Chuck Schumer. Fresh off a slick maneuver to take over from Harry Reid in 2017, Senator Schumer quietly signed on to a bill allowing Congressional intervention into any final agreement made between the White House and Tehran.
Although the clever, calculating and crafty Senator from New York kept his treachery on the down low as long as he could, when the details of the framework agreement was announced, Schumer was forced to expose his position.  Senator Schumer stated for the record, "This is a very serious issue that deserves careful consideration and I have a classified briefing in the future. I strongly believe congress should have the right to disapprove any agreement and I support the Corker bill which would allow that to occur." In other words, Congress, not the President, will have the final say.
In reality, seasoned politicos like Chuck Schumer don't survive, let alone thrive for decades in Congress without catering to special interest. And since there's no more important special interest entity controlling Congress than that of the Israeli government at this time, one can reasonably speculate, Senator Schumer wouldn't think twice about shilling for recently reelected Benjamin Netanyahu against a lame duck Barack Obama.
Still, Sen. Schumer has to be careful before plunging the knife into the back the President, because the Obama administration has the polling numbers in its favor on this issue. Most Americans want the deal. Most Iranians want the deal. Most of the international community want the deal and by extension, most of the world want the deal. How Sen. Schumer and other Democrat butt plugs for Bibi navigate the awkward position they've found themselves in will be interesting.
Bottom line: When Congress returns from spring-break, to launch a series of public and private hearings on the deal, keen observers will be keying in on how doggedly Democrats fight the science, fight the facts and fight the overwhelming worldwide approval the Iran-P5+1 deal is receiving.
What questions the Democrats ask will be will provide insight in to motives. What answers the Democrats refuse to accept will be infinitely enlightening. And of course, what conditions and amendments eventually demanded will be illuminating to say the least.  Podcast Below!
