Issues Under Fire: U.N. General Assembly 2015 Could Be A Blockbuster
With the world on fire, this year's meeting of the minds at the U.N. General Assembly should be poised to generate some serious news. While the every member state will be represented, as always the usual hot spots will get the most attention. The Savvy observer will key in on Iran, Syria, Israel and the Palestinians. Although, there are others, these will be the headliners.
Initially, all eyes will be on Iran's President Hassan Rouhani to see how Tehran will represent the deal Iran signed with the P5+1 this year. Now that President Obama has enough votes to negate any efforts to thwart this historic international compromise, Rouhani will likely use this opportunity to seal the deal with the international community by maintaining Iran's new peaceful narrative.
When it comes to Israel, the world will have to brace itself for another Benjamin Netanyahu browbeating since the international community voted to accept the nuclear deal with Iran. We'll likely hear a lot about Iran being a bunch of lying cheating blood thirsty villains working tirelessly and secretly to produce a bomb. Actually, it might be entertaining watching the Israeli Prime Minister put on another performance of Chicken Little, so stay tuned for that.
Syria on the other hand is another story all together. Odds are Bashar al-Assad will be a no show, but considering most of his country is trying to start new lives in Europe due to his never ending civil war, Syria will a huge topic of discussion. His representative's mission is to convince the international community to stand with him against ISIS and reach an agreement to end hostilities against his government. From where Europe stands now, that might not be that tough to pull off.
Then of course there is the Palestinians. After the vicious beating Gaza took last summer at the hand of the Israelis during Operation Protective Edge, they've clearly had enough time to put together a plan to trigger another vote for full U.N. membership. It will be interesting to see how the United States will use its vote power to block the inclusion of the Palestinians considering the strained relations the Obama administration has with Israel these days.
Bottom line: Since the United States is intimately involved in every one of the aforementioned hot spots, the world will focus on President Obama's speech to gage how committed his administration is to remaining engaged. With Europe being flooded with refugees they're struggling to accommodate, the last thing the Obama administration needs now is to create more of them. Podcast below!
BTW, the Pope will address the U.N. General Assembly as well, but no one will take his message seriously.
