Issues Under Fire: Netanyahu visit, Syrian Rebels Use Gas and Russian Metrojet Flight 9268
When President Obama meets with Benjamin Netanyahu this morning, he'll have precious little time for false pleasantries, as reports of Syrian rebels using mustard gas against civilians surfaced friday last. Adding the crash of Russian Metrojet Flight 9268 over the Sinai into the mix and the contentious Israeli Prime Minister will likely be considered a low priority. And the odds of President Obama being interested in another history lesson about the Jewish people will likely be really low too.
Now that all eyes are on Egypt's ability to assure the world its still safe to visit the pyramids as Cairo engages the spread of ISIS and affiliates and Vladimir Putin's response to the growing probability of a Russian plane being taken down by an act of regional terror, Israel's self inflicted issues won't garner much sympathy, attention or support. While Israel may be a major cause of the region's horrors, ISIS for the time being has taken the spotlight.
Another visit just to shake hands for the cameras and assure anybody who still gives a damn of the unbreakable bound the two nations share is waste of valuable time. Besides, what could the two leaders possible talk about when they fundamentally disagree over ever major issue keeping the Israeli-Palestinian conflict alive and raging. With tensions and violence quickly rising to the level of a third Intifada, Netanyahu has nothing to say that hasn't been said before. President Obama should be in the war room not the oval office.
When the O.P.C.W Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons pinned the blame for the use of mustard gas on Syrian insurgents during the month of August, the Obama administration had to know it had to go into spin mode immediately. Supporters of arming the Syrian opposition knew they'd have to sell the Syrian rebel story all over again. If the Syrian rebels are using chemical weapons, why is U.S. supporting them? Or, did the Obama administration just hook up with the wrong rebels again? Moreover, people are beginning to wonder if there's any "good rebels" left? Maybe, the only good rebel is a dead rebel!
Since Russia entered the fight against ISIS on the opposite side of Obama's regional coalition of the unknown, unverified and uncommitted, they too have given the administration much to contemplate. Having Russia even more willing to take the lead in Syria after ISIS blew one of its commercial airliners out of the sky will only keep the White House and defense strategist on high alert. Vladimir Putin has always been unpredictable, so there's no telling what his next move will be.
Bottom line: In reality, the Israeli Prime Minister only wants the United States and the American people to keep doing three things and three things only. He wants the United States and the American people to keep giving Israel all the money and military support they want. He wants the United States and the American people to keep looking the other way when it comes to the Palestinians. But most of all, Benjamin Netanyahau wants the United States and the American people to keep out of Israel's internal affairs. As long a the United States keep doing those things, its doubtful he gives two sh*ts about the rest of the world. Podcast below!
