Issues Under Fire: US Signals Europe: Close Your Doors to Refugees
Anyone fleeing a war zone will never set foot on American soil. No matter what the circumstances, no Syrian, Afghan or Iraqi will find sanctuary in America. They will find no rest for the weary here. They will find neither pity nor sympathy in the hearts of those calling themselves Americans. And most all, they will find no freedom in America. The message to those seeking refuge from some of the most hellish conditions on earth is, do not look to America for help.
If you're huddled among masses of tired and poor people yearning to breathe free, you'd better keep stepping because America has slammed the door, raised the gate and filled the moat with alligators. If that's not enough of a deterrent, armed drones, land mines and gun turrets should keep the world's homeless, hungry and helpless at bay. While the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island remain open, they only exist as iconic tourist destinations. For $25 USD, you can see what America once stood for.
Governors across the country have let it be known, America refuse to accept the risk associated with opening its doors to refugees. Refugees are strangers and strangers mean dangers. Fanning the fears of a Paris style attack in America's Homeland, presidential wannabes and other ignorant public officials are rewriting America's narrative. Diversity and religious tolerance has no place in America any longer. America's narrative has become is primarily White, Christian and cruel.
Some of America's so-called leaders are publicly suggesting Christians could be offered refuge but not a Muslim. While such blatantly xenophobic proposals would have been resoundingly rejected a few months ago, today this type of rhetoric has an audience. This type of ethnic and religious based separatism is gaining traction. After all, if Americans could be convinced to turn its back on tens of thousands fleeing the drug wars and lawlessness of Latin America, demonizing Muslims fleeing Syria should be easy.
By the time America's Cable News talking heads heats up the debate, Syrian refugees should be under no delusions about how America feels about their plight. They should know once and for all, America is not an option. They should know they've been abandoned by their last hope. Syrian refugees will join Afghans, Iraqis and anybody else from countries the U.S. has engaged Muslims militarily. Syrians refugees will end up on the growing heap of America's foreign policy blunders.
Considering U.S. foreign policy and military presence has been a major, if not the primary factor in fueling the violence in the destabilized region, one would think a measure of guilt would be in order. One would think a modicum of compassion would be forthcoming. One would think America would at least consider saving the children.
Bottom line: After more than four years of covering stories about chemical weapons, beheadings, barrel bombings, rape and torture being perpetrated against a people who's only mistake was believing America would one day come to the rescue, this observer is ashamed to be considered an American this morning. And most tragic of all, some of these poor bastards still think we care. Podcast below!
