Issues Under Fire: Rahm Emmanuel Trapped in Web of Lies
Oh, what a tangled web we weave: When first we practice to deceive. Had Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel taken a lesson from former N.Y. congressmen Anthony Weiner, he might have handled his last chance to do the right thing differently. The minute Mayor Emmanuel stepped up to the microphone to field questions regarding the video tape of Laquan McDonald's death, he should've been prepared to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. And the truth was simple: He F#%ked up. F#%king up is forgivable, lying about it is not.
The mayor would have had an easier time explaining how he'd seen the horrible tape and was faced with the tough decision of releasing incendiary evidence at the peril of fueling a heated national racial crisis. The public might have understood if he explained he did the best he could to make restitution to the family until justice could be served. He should have told the public he knows justice delayed is justice denied, but in the heat of the moment, he just didn't see it that way.
However, in hindsight, as your mayor I was wrong, he should have said. In hindsight, I now know there is no good time for bad news, he should have said. In hindsight, I let the city and the people of Chicago down when they needed me most, he should have said. But he didn't say any of those things. Instead, the mayor lied his ass off. To admit mistakes, wrongdoing and bad judgment takes strength of character, ethics and a strong moral compass. People lacking these traits will always find themselves choosing to cover their sh*t up, rather than cleaning their sh*t up.
While the truth can hurt like hell, its like ripping a band aide off quickly. The pain is real but it don't last that long. A lie on the other hand may keep the pain at bay for awhile, but you know its always there and can become a really painful issue at any time. You can never relax with lies. You always have to be ready to provide another lie to coverup the last lie. The longer the lies live, the bigger they grow. The bigger the lies grow, the less believable they become. When you are no longer believable, people start asking for your resignation.
Although people hate liars, many feel bad and even embarrassed sometimes when they see somebody trapped in one. On the other hand, when a liar is caught in the act, some people like to toy with them. Some people like to give the liar as much rope as they can to catch them in more lies. Sometimes it can be fun watching somebody lie, knowing the only one being deceived is the lier. Sometimes it can be fun to watch a lier lie just to see how long it takes for them to realize the jig is up.
Bottom line: Now that Rahm Emmanuel has been exposed as a lier, its only a matter of time before his days in public service comes to very public and very ugly conclusion. As the press begin its feeding frenzy in Chicago having fun debunking the mayor's defenses and excuses, the American people will be entertained to no end watching his wings being plucked like a trapped fly in a spider's web. True, a good sex scandal like Anthony Weiner's weiner will always be of interest, witnessing Rahm Emmanuel's fall will have to do until Donald Trump's lying ass can be brought to task.
