Issues Under Fire: Supreme Court Replacement Is Supreme Distraction

While some were saddened by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia's passing this weekend, others were annoyed he did so during the most contentious campaign for the United States presidency in recent memory. Scalia's so-called loss, will only heat up the race with disingenuous arguments to delay the process of confirming his replacement, while creating needless distractions from critical issues already being poorly covered. If these observations appear cold and callous, one need only remind oneself of how Supreme Court Justices become Supreme Court Justices.
Conventional wisdom would convince the casual observer to view a Supreme Court Justice as morally, ethically and above all, above the political fray. Supreme Court Justices are seen as the best legal minds the nation can produce. Americans have been sold on the idea that only the smartest, wisest, evenhanded, level headed, forward thinking, constitutionally grounded legal scholars ever ascend to serve as a Justice on the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, its all a pack of lies.
Whenever polled, the American people have consistently rated Congress as the most corrosively corrupt entity of the U.S. political construct. Populated with political hacks polluting every step of the process, the very thought of squeaky clean legalists, of strong ethical and moral character, lowering themselves to endure a rancid and rabidly partisan confirmation process is ridiculous. You might find some ambitious lawyers seeking said opportunity, but individuals of character won't swim with in that swamp.
After sifting through and dismissing untold numbers of qualified prospects, the most loathsome, scummiest, untrustworthy politically driven trash imaginable, will select who'll decide what women can do with their bodies or what cops can do with their guns. Simply put, if the politicians are corrupt, the process is corrupt, if the process is corrupt, any product the politicians or the process produces will inevitably be corrupt or easily corrupted.
And when really you think about it, how much can a political appointee be worth when the politicians making the appointment ain't worth shit themselves. Who are these Justices anyway? Most Americans couldn't name all nine Supreme Court Justices on a bet. Cloaked in black and cloistered away to collaborate and contemplate how our lives will be managed, monitored and policed, Americans are actually placing their dwindling freedoms and civil rights in the hands of suspiciously selected and politically vetted characters.
Hence, what the American people end up with is far less than the best and the brightest legal minds deliberating over complex legal issues that'll have to stand the test of time. What Americans get is bloated resumes, high profile hearings for political grandstanding, back room compromises and for all intents and purposes, nine shady characters, to assure constitutional fanatics and social issue devotees the so-called "process" still works.
Bottom line: With so many critical issues already being ignored by cable media's name calling coverage of the 2016 presidential elections, Antonin Scalia's death is hardly worth the distraction. So despite all the calls for President Obama to neglect his constitutional obligation to nominate Scalia's replacement as soon as possible, one should keep in mind, no matter who's nominated or when they're confirmed, whomever Congress delivers won't be any better than the shady character who expired this weekend.
