Just the headline alone is enough to get heads turning, eyes rolling and blood pressures rising. But before Black and other non-White Americans start painting protest placards, planning demonstrations and calling for boycotts of everything White, this observer would advise waiting to see how White people present White History Month. For once, all of America will get a chance to see and hear the White version of White people's history in this country. Aren't you curious?
According to Abe Proctor, Portland Community College's Community Relations Manager, "We’re trying to force a more nuanced discussion of society as it exists and how that society privileges people from a certain background and disadvantages people from other backgrounds.” He also said, “The intent isn’t to cast blame on anyone but rather to look at the context of racism and how it affects everyone.” While this all sounds harmlessly academic, its difficult envisioning White history without blaming somebody.
From this observer's perspective, White history is so interwoven with non-White history in America, its impossible to look at racism in any context without establishing who's responsible for it and its persistence. Once that's fully understood and accepted, the question of how racism affects everyone will answer itself. Its no secret American Whites have always felt superior to non-Whites. Thats why White people constructed and insidiously enforce physical, psychological and social barriers between themselves and people of color.
History will confirm, Whites have had a deleterious effect on every non-White they've come in contact with. History will confirm, few if any non-White people have ever prospered in peace and independence once they've had the misfortune of encountering White people. No matter what color you are in America, historically speaking, if you're not White, you've probably gotten screwed by White people. Think about it, after America's native people met American Whites, life sucked and it stayed that way.
The same with people from the Caribbean islands to Hawaiian islands, as soon as White people showed up, their lives took a downturn and those lives stayed that way. Whenever or wherever Whites arrive, they come with bibles, another language to learn, a new cultural identity to be adopted and a lifetime of servitude.
Historically speaking, after meeting White people, non-Whites didn't even have a history of their own anymore. White people took their lands, their futures and even their Gods. And by the way, these aren't mere criticisms, these are facts. It is what it is, because they are who they are. One can only wonder how long it'll be before White people launch a White Lives Matter campaign?
Bottom line: Considering White History is only a success story from the stand point of White people's ability to lie, cheat, steal, connive and murder their way to the top of America's racial totem pole, one would be hard pressed to understand why Portland's Community College would want to pursue this witless and self incriminating endeavor. Still, witnessing White people whitewash White History, might prove to be entertaining if nothing else. We'll be watching and you should too. Podcast below!
