While the American people are being fed a steady diet of commercialized corporate info-dribble cleverly designed to look like news, few have noticed how far to the right that info-dribble has drifted. Right Wing media outlets like Fox News and the like, opine daily over the so-called Liberal media's bias and lack of balance. It's a complaint that gives Fox News a reason to exist. And, because that complaint has been so successful, it actually gives a pseudo Liberal news outlet like MSNBC a reason to exist.
Anyone who'll take the time to do a cursory analysis of America's news media will quickly realize, there is no Liberal media bias, because there is no Liberal media. One would be hard pressed to find anything comparable to Fox News on the Liberal side of the news media ledger. Since all mainstream media is corporate driven and produced, the likelihood of Liberal leaning issues being seriously addressed is unlikely.
Sure, one could argue MSNBC covers social issues from the Left like no one else on cable news. If it's a story about a woman's right to choose being challenged by some crazed religious types, they're all over it. If there's anything to do with the LBGTQ community being discriminated against in any way shape or form, MSNBC will ride that issue until the legs fall off. And don't let them get their hands on a good race related story. They'll bleed it for all it's worth. And while MSNBC should be applauded for what they do, one should understand what they don't do.
When it comes to who stole America's money, who helped the thieves do it and who's protecting those thieves now, MSNBC is just as protective of the corporate culture that spawn them as Fox News is. When a candidate like Bernie Sanders stepped up to take on the corporate elites, challenge the wolves of Wall Street and expose the stranglehold the billionaire class is maintaining over the nation, MSNBC can be seen supporting the corporate candidate Hillary Clinton. A true Left leaning media outlet would have explored Clinton's connections to big money with far more journalistic vigor.
In all fairness, MSNBC did have real Left leaning reporters covering financial, economic and race issues with more integrity and intensity, but when guys like Dylan Ratigan started going after Wall Street culprits, his ass was gone and gone fast. When guys like Ed Shultz started railing against the TPP his stat at MSNBC was cut short. And when Melissa Harris Perry stood her ground to cover Black stories as she saw fit, that relationship was severed posthaste.
When it comes to covering stories of big money influence, corporate corruption or income inequality with any true depth, you won't find much more than a cartoonish effort from MSNBC. Why you may ask, are we picking on MSNBC? Simply put, MSNBC is the only cable news outlet even remotely considered Left leaning. Perhaps that's why they're dead last in cable news ratings. MSNBC is no champion of the left like Fox News champions the causes of the Right. Hence, Lefties are left hanging.
Of course, Al Jazeera made a go of it for awhile, but they'll be leaving the broadcast airways in the United States soon due to poor ratings. And smaller operations like Democracy Now are so under funded, they'll never compete with the mainstream's dominance in attracting corporate advertising. And when you think that through, you'll understand few corporate advertisers are interested in support entities that could one day shed light on their questionable activities.
Bottom line: There is a serious vacuum to be filled in America's news media. There are millions of well educated, highly interested and involved Americans being under-served and ignored. There is an exodus of eyes and ears seeking trustworthy news sources that actually produce unvarnished and unfiltered news they can actually use. Focusing on sh*t like Hillary Clinton's issues with middle class Whites or Donald Trumps issues with women might sell a lot of commercials, but it won't help anybody trying to understand what's going on in their world.
