How Big Pharma Turned Doctors Into Dealers and Patients Into Junkies
If you wanna kickback with a fascinating tale of how Big Phama's scumbaggery scored huge profits turning unsuspecting Americans into ravenous zombie junkies, we got a hot one for you today. And as with most of our tales, this one ain't pretty either.
Considering opiate addiction is as old as dirt, we began wondering how Big Pharma was able to convince the FDA, Congress and America's physicians that opiates would be a safe treatment for pain. So, we started looking and asking questions. And after only doing a simple search on Google with the word "opiate", our eyes were opened to the history of a drug classification so devastating, one has to ask oneself, how could "they" NOT have predicted the eventuality of a junkie invasion.
We researched this story from the infamous opium dens (original crack houses) that flourished during the 19th century, to America's Civil War and found nothing but tales of horrors. We uncovered accounts of people from all walks of life, flocking to opium dens to get high, while they thought they were leaving all their problems behind. Unfortunately, most of those people left those dens with new problems. They left with an insatiable hunger. And when they could no longer afford to feed that hunger, they had even more problems.
Before modern medicine, severe battlefield wounds were most often treated with a hacksaw. Arms and legs were piled high in the corners of makeshift triage units after every major skirmish. To quiet their screams, soldiers both grey and blue, were given shit like Morphine to get them through the night. But those who survived may not have been the lucky ones because they, too, had a new problem. They had what was diagnosed at the time as something called "army disease". At the end of the Civil War, over 400,000 men returned home with that same insatiable hunger. What they did when their supply ran out is, of course, another tale of horror.
In 1906, America passed the Pure Food and Drug Act. It required "Secret Elixirs" containing ingredients like cocaine, heroin, morphine and alcohol, which were available at most stores as miracle cure-alls, be labeled with correct information about their ingredients, as well as suggested dosages. In 1914, America passed the Harrison Narcotic Act. It was needed to control the massive flow of opiates in order to protect the public from rising addiction. In 1962, America passed the Drug Efficacy Amendment. It required drug manufacturers to provide proof of the effectiveness and safety of their drugs before their approval.
We could go on and on, but we're sure you get the point. No one should be surprised that opiates and opioids are incredibly dangerous and always have been. So, here's the next question: why did our friendly primary care physicians prescribe them so liberally? In 2014, American physicians wrote more than 212 million prescriptions for dope like Vicodin and Oxycodone. Surely these trusted healthcare providers knew the tragic consequence their patients would face. If they didn't, they're criminally negligent. If they did, they're criminals, because they're no more than drug dealers with a license. And to cut those patients off without sending them directly to drug rehab is more than criminal, it's evil.
With heroin being the most affordable (street) alternative to the expensive prescription dope, addicted pain patients are sure to be turned into the zombie junkies we all fear. Friends, family, neighbors and coworkers, once productive members of society, quickly become creepy, dirty, lying, cheating and thieving strangers. In many cases, the horrid transformation occurs within months of their first few experiences with prescription dope. And considering alternative pain treatments like neurostimulators, anticonvulsants, physical therapy, massage, acupuncture and chiropractic care have been around as long as Big Phama, it's impossible to overlook the glaring conspiracy theories staring at us.
Bottom line: The facts are clear. Big Pharma, aka dope manufacturers, coerced the FDA to approve these addictive drugs for no other reason than big profits. With Congress successfully lobbied to look the other way, Big Phama, aka dope manufacturers, used America's healthcare delivery system to distribute their "product" through our friendly neighbor primary care physicians. We know this sounds crazy, but that's just how "they" did it. Podcast below.
