January 20th 2017: The Day Hope Died in America
Others may see this day completely differently, but we're marking it on our calendars to be remembered, because January 20, 2017 will surely to go down in history as the day Hope died. And while we're grieving the tragic loss, we should have known it would end this way. Hope never really had a chance in America. When Hope arrived in 2009, age-old adversaries were lying in wait. And formidable adversaries they were. Despising Hope from the moment they laid eyes on him, Ignorance, Greed and Selfishness wanted to strangle the audacious upstart in the crib. They despised Hope, because Hope seemed so different, so foreign.
Perhaps if Hope had help, he could've survived, but the power of Ignorance, Greed and Selfishness was far too much to overcome alone. Ignorance never understood Hope. And what Ignorance didn't understand, Ignorance feared. And what Ignorance feared, Ignorance hated. Ignorance simply couldn't grasp the fact the someone so different could be a friend. It was a time when one thought Hope could teach Ignorance a new way of looking at things, but the harder Hope tried, the more Ignorance wanted to stay the same. Ignorance hated Change too.
Greed and Selfishness on the other hand, understood Hope very well. They were smart. They saw Hope as a threat because Hope was all about helping people. And helping people is simply something Greed and Selfishness don't do very much. They didn't want to see Hope changing things. Hope was giving people ideas like universal healthcare, free college tuition and living wages. Hope was opening the people's eyes. Hope had them asking questions. Greed and Selfishness didn't want to explain to the people why they had so much and everyone else had so little. Hope was making Greed and Selfishness look bad. Hope had to be stopped. And that's just what they did.
No matter what Hope tried to do for the people, Ignorance, Greed and Selfishness wanted no part of it. When Hope said the climate was warming the planet and the people needed to do something about it, Ignorance denied the idea. When Hope said Wall Street had robbed Main Street and had a duty to help rebuild the lives they destroyed along the way, Greed just changed the subject. When Hope said the rich needed to pay their fair share to help maintain a dignified social safety net for seniors and those in need, Selfishness argued taxes were a burden on job creators and demanded tax cuts.
Between the three of them, Ignorance, Greed and Selfishness did everything they could to destroy the people's faith in Hope. They created a narrative that Hope was a bad thing, Hope couldn't be trusted and the only thing that would happen if they dared to believed in Hope, is their lives would be ruined. They did such a good job of demonizing Hope, many of the people Hope wanted to help, began to hate Hope, too. By the time Ignorance, Greed and Selfishness were done with Hope, Hope was dead in America.
Bottom line: As we grieve Hope's sad demise, one can only wonder what Ignorance, Greed and Selfishness will replace Hope with, because the absence of Hope leaves only Misery. Hope 2009-2017 RIP. Welcome to Dark Times. Podcast below.
