Donald Trump and More Bad News
With a ceaseless stream of negative stories coming out of the White House daily, we felt it was important to ensure our coverage of U.S. domestic and foreign policy issues through the lens of Donald Trump remained fair. The first thing we did was search Issues Under Fire to review all stories, opinions and analysis posted about Donald Trump. Click here for the results. Finding a constant drumbeat of our own shocking headlines, we noticed those headlines were simply echoing global voices of international concerns. Still, we had to be sure we weren't failing to recognize any good Donald Trump might be doing. Here's what we found.
Searching Donald Trump's name in Google's News Feed, we were struck to find nothing but negative coverage of Trump emanating from every corner of the world. From mainstream news outlets to the most obscure alternative Blogs, Donald Trump is taking fire for everything from being corrupt to being crazy. The latest headlines told the tale: The Hill: What do the Russians Have on Donald Trump?, The Atlantic: Donald Trump's Loose Lips Vindicates His CriticsCNN: Donald Trump's Poll Numbers Should Terrify Republicans, The Washington Post: Loyalty is a one-way Street for Donald Trump, Newsweek: NATO Plans for Donald Trump's Short Attention Span, OregonLive.Com: Donald Trump Closely Tied to Russian Mob Could Face Racketeering Charges. We could go on and on, but by now, you get the picture. Donald Trump is nothing but bad news.
However, because Donald Trump being bad news really isn't news, we decided to do the same Google News search for President Xi Jinping of China. After all, China is the second largest economy in the world and closing in on the United States fast. How was President Xi being covered by the world's media? We needed to know that, too. And much to our surprise, Xi was getting some seriously positive headlines. The New York Times: Xi Jinping Positions China at Center of New Economic Order, Newsweek: Russian President Vladimir Putin Backs China's New Silk Road, Straits Times: Chinese President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road Forum Yields Deals, Telegraph.co.uk: China's Xi jinping Says He will Protect Paris Climate Deal. ValueWalk: China takes the mantle of Globalization, Salt Lake Tribune: China's Xi outlines plans for wide cooperation in trade plan. Again, we could go on and on, but you get it by now. President Xi seems to know how to lead a country.
And you know this post would not be complete without doing a Vladimir Putin Google News search. After all, were it not for the Russian President, perhaps Donald Trump's news coverage wouldn't be so distressful. But once again, much to our surprise, Putin didn't fare all that badly in the headlines. A random check today turned up the following headlines: Vox: Trump's Decision to Fire Comey is another win for Vladimir Putin, USA Today: Vladimir Putin's unexpected piano recital steals the show in China, CNN: Vladimir Putin boosts action-man image with ice hockey match, India TV News: U.S. to blame for Global Cyber Attack: Vladimir Putin, So, except for this nugget, National Post headline: Here are 10 critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin who died violently or in suspicious ways, even the Russian Bad Ass is getting better press than Donald Trump.
Bottom line: Without the need for any complicated algorithms, a simple daily search of Google News or any other popular search engine, will give you a good idea of what the world is thinking, saying and writing about famous people, infamous characters and world leaders. So, when we found our alternative views and analysis of Donald Trump had gone mainstream, we felt confident to continue on this course. Donald Trump is bad news.
