Issues Under Fire: North Korea Warns Nuclear War Could Start At Any Moment
Although the copy we'd prepared for today's podcast and post was literally earth shattering in its importance, or so we thought, news alerts started coming in indicating North Korea was no longer interested in dialog or diplomacy. Since Kim Jong-un was now promising to show the United States what they're capable of, we had to change directions. When you're facing the very real threat of a nuclear exchange anywhere on the planet, it's time to pay attention. And with an unstable moron at the helm in the Oval Office, surrounded by enablers, it's time to be very worried.
If you didn't think Kim Jong-un got the message when "45" Tweeted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was wasting his time talking to Pyongyang because "only one thing will work", you should think again. And even though that "one thing" wasn't clearly explained, most are guessing it means war is imminent. Still, while it's true the North Koreans are infamous for making outrageous threats against the United States and its allies, this time they could mean it. Kim Jong-un is clearly signaling he's no more interested in diplomacy at this time than "45" is.
Last week, North Korean foreign minister Ri Yong Ho stated Donald Trump had "lit the fuse of war against the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea)". That said, the North Korean government now says it will only engage in diplomacy after it's sent a clear message that the DPRK has a reliable defensive and offensive capability to counter any aggression from the United States. How do they plan to do that, you ask? According to legitimate new sources, they plan to conduct an above ground nuclear detonation, followed by the launching of an ICBM (InterContinental Ballistic Missile) that could reach the U.S. mainland.
North Korea has clearly taken a page out of the United States' negotiating playbook. They're preparing to negotiate from a position of strength. They want to be able to let the United States know, there'll be a heavy price to pay for any attempts to invade Pyongyang or assassinate its leadership. There will be no regime change. From the North Korean perspective, only nuclear weapons can guarantee their nation's survival, sovereignty and to be taken seriously. Besides, after witnessing how the U.S. reneged on the Iran nuclear deal, trust is no longer an option. As if it every really was.
Bottom line: Like Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un is convinced, "only one thing" will work to dissuade the other from continued provocations: the threat of nuclear annihilation. After hacking into South Korea's military networks and reportedly stealing 235 gigabytes of sensitive U.S. military secrets, Kim Jon-un may have all the evidence he needs to conclude a nuclear armed North Korea is his only option. And to use nuclear weapons preemptively may be necessary to prove he means business. Whether this is just another belligerent bluff or a final warning to heed, we won't know for sure until the first bombs fall. Podcast below.
