Issues Under Fire: If Trump Really is Nuts, How Do We Deal With Him?
If you came to work on Monday morning and found the C.E.O. standing in the office completely nude and babbling incoherently into a phone with nobody listening on the other end, you'd be wise to conclude that he or she had lost their mind. While your initial response would be to call for help, you'd also be wise to consider how doing so could impact your job and the jobs of others. If the news got out, deals would be put on hold, creditors would start calling for immediate repayment, stockholders would be in a panic and you could kiss your 401k goodbye. Unfortunately, the world is facing just such a circumstance.
Now that we know the President of the United States is suffering from some form of mental illness, anyone paying with sense enough to care will be forced to start having some serious conversations. Up until now, the subject of Donald Trump's sanity was a private matter among most public officials and media professionals. Many avoided broaching the issue for a lack of proof and the fear of a fierce backlash from the bully pulpit. And despite the fact that many will remain committed to providing cover for Trump's glaring mental deficiencies, others are looking for ways to mitigate the inherent dangers of an unhinged mind making decisions that could impact their lives. However, therein lies a major conflict.
Make no mistake about it. There are those in and outside the United States who'll see Donald Trump's mental flaws as a good thing. The minute it became known that Trump was a fool for flattery, the sharks moved in for the kill. The only strategy necessary to get near and remain close to Donald Trump was to say good stuff about him. If you praised him, pledged your undying loyalty, or better yet, showed unbridled admiration for his personal accomplishments, you stood a good chance of getting Donald Trump to do whatever you wanted him to do. And if you did these things publicly, you'd be guaranteed to have Trump's blessings. Both the Saudis and the Israelis did it, and they both reaped great rewards. Saudi Arabia got billions in weapons sales and Israel got Jerusalem. Not bad for a few worthless compliments.
Sadly, this bootlicking, ass-wiping strategy has gained traction domestically. Former Trump critics like Senators Lindsey Graham and Bob Corker have been seen making 180ยบ flip-flops when it comes to Donald Trump. Sen. Graham no longer refers to Trump as a crazy kook. In fact, they've become golfing buds. Sen. Corker, who once called Trump unfit, unstable and a lot worse, has now softened his tone, voting for Trump's Tax Bill after stating he wouldn't. What these Senators are seeking for themselves behind the scenes remains unknown, but what is clear, they've obviously concluded speaking truth to power was not the way to get anything from Donald Trump.
For those with pride and principles to consider, or simply feel uncomfortable being a kiss-ass, they 'll need to find ways to work around the Trump administration. Many nation states will find it necessary to put deals, treaties, and agreements on hold and pray for America to correct itself. Others will seek refuge in China's expanding political and economic orbit. While still others will look to partner with Russia as an alternative. South Korea is making decisions like that as we type this post. Do they stick with the U.S. or do they take their fate into their own hands when dealing with North Korea going forward?
Bottom line: While showering Donald Trump with compliments like; "he's sharp as a tack" and "smart as a whip" may garner a few short-term gains from the temporary influence, one should understand those lies could destroy one's credibility and eventually one's future. If you doubt this assessment, just ask butt sniffers like Sean Spicer and Anthony Scaramucci or worse, a House Nigger like Omarosa Manigault. None of them will be able to resurrect themselves or truly respect themselves ever again. Podcast below.
