Issues Under Fire: "Shithole" Shitstorm is Just Trump Being Trump
Stop the presses. We got Breaking News. Donald Trump has issues with people of color. Trump made a disparaging remark about Haitians and Africa. He called them Shithole countries and by extension, shithole people. What a horrible thing to say. How dare he. This is insufferable! This is an outrage! This calls for another conversation about race in America. And while all that is true, this is just another Trump distraction. This is a pattern of Trump's behavior that can only be described as Trump being Trump.
A master of media manipulation, Donald Trump has managed to feed a shit-load of red meat to his base, while giving the mainstream media a red-hot issue to feast on for the next few news cycles. Hardcore Trump supporters loved what he said about Haiti and Africa. Some have waited a lifetime to hear "their" president publicly express such sentiments. Donald Trump is one of us, they'll say with White Pride. Black and Brown people are not. Trump wants to make America White again and that means purging this country of color. Now, who's gonna care about some boring Russia investigation when you've got the nation and beyond refocused and fixated on racial strife.
Because race is such a historically gut-wrenching topic to confront, many will find themselves emotionally drawn into the fray. Since race issues trump everything in America, the White House is elated to see less coverage given to the FBI's preparations to interview Trump concerning Russia's meddling in the 2016 elections and possible obstruction of justice charges related thereto. That news, along with Trump's mental fitness and intellectual shortcomings, will take a backseat (at least for the short-term) to this latest perfectly timed diversion. No one in the administration wants to watch 24/7 reports of how Donald Trump will handle the pressure of facing tough questions under oath.
Let's face it, this is where the rubber meets the road in an FBI investigation of a "major" person of interest. The Special Counsel has all his ducks lined up. Mueller knows where he wants to go with the interview and how far he can take it. He knows what questions to ask because he already has the answers. Donald Trump may not be aware of it, but he's been hunted. And like any prey, the FBI has studied Trump's behavior patterns. They've been watching hours and hours of taped interviews, speeches and public conversations. They know his tells. A tell is a poker term for an unconscious action that betrays one's attempt to deceive. This is not good for an interviewee like Trump. But wait, it gets worse.
If the Mueller team is as prepared as most observers feel they are, they'll know how to press Trump's buttons to get under his thin skin. These seasoned professional interviewers are fully aware that Donald Trump is a pathological liar and he's prone to go off script and ad lib. They know Trump has a short temper, so they'll ask questions specifically designed to yank his chain and rattle his cage. They'll have him out of his comfort zone in no time at all. And since Donald Trump is not known for listening to advisors, the only thing Robert Mueller has to do is simply let Trump be Trump.
Bottom line: Don't be fooled. Don't follow the herd. And most of all, don't take the race bait. Stay focused on what really matters. And what really matters most is, the fact that Donald Trump is crazy and crazy people don't do well under pressure. If Robert Mueller is half the prosecutor his reputation makes him out to be, the country may be on the road to recovery sooner than we think. Podcast below.
