Issues Under Fire: Donald Trump & His Shyster's Defense
Although Donald Trump's shyster, Rudy Giuliani never fails to create a shit-storm of controversy every time he appears on camera defending his lying, cheating, thieving and likely guilty as hell client, this weekend's performance was a category 5. Making his rounds on the Sunday talking heads and politico shows, the president's mouthpiece advanced the idea (albeit improbable) that the President of the United States can pardon himself. Yep, responding to a "confidential" 20-page letter outlining the President's legal defense strategies and options, the slippery pettifogger let it be known that if the heat of Mueller's investigation gets too hot, Donald Trump has some serious presidential powers to douse the flames. Donald Trump has a few get out of jail free cards to play.
Letter to Mueller: "It remains our position that the president's actions here, by virtue of his position as the chief law enforcement officer, could neither constitutionally nor legally constitute obstruction because that would amount to obstructing himself and that he could if he wished to terminate the inquiry or even exercise his power to pardon if he so desired." Crazy, I know, but there's more. These shysters plan to argue that the president can order the termination of a Justice Department or FBI investigation at any time and for any reason. And BTW, these guys are planning to argue the president can't be forced to respond to a subpoena. Now, I freely admit I'm no legal scholar but I if what I'm reading and hearing is true, these shysters are actually making a case for the President being above the law.
Although Rudy says the leaked letter was authored and presented before he was part of Donald Trump's legal team and that he didn't agree with this particular approach to defending the president, he did agree with the team's assessment of Trump's constitutional powers to evade justice by obstructing it. While stating it would be highly unlikely Trump would be so bold as to risk being perceived as being guilty as hell, he still feels, the president has the authority to put the kibosh on this "Witch Hunt." Even though Rudy "the consigliere" said the act of pardoning himself would trigger catastrophic political consequences, technically, he could do it. Personally, if only for the entertainment value, I'd love to see that happen. Imagine the headline: Scum-bag gets Himself Off. Somehow, I sense desperation. If Trump's crew is forced to test a defense like this they know their client is in a sh*tload legal jeopardy. I love watching guilty people sweat.
Still, it'll be interesting to see how the GOP reacts to this leaked defense strategy. Will Trump loyalist and lackeys remain silent or downplay the significance of this percolating constitutional crisis? And what about his base? Will the faithful rally behind their president and say to hell with the Russia investigation, to hell with Robert Mueller, and to hell with the Deep State? Will they believe the "Government" is out to get Donald Trump? Will they believe the "spying on my campaign conspiracy"? Will they believe Donald Trump's assertions that Liberal FAKE NEWS outlets are intentionally undermining his presidency? Will they believe Trump when he tells them the Justice Department and the FBI are setting traps for him and it'll be impossible to treated fairly during an interview? Well, the smart money says they'll believe anything Trump Tweets them to believe.
Trump supporters voted for him to shake things up and break things down. They didn't vote for unity, they wanted a divided nation. They didn't vote for diversity, they voted against it. They like the chaos and unorthodoxy of uncertainty. They've been sold on the narrative that any criticism of Trump is because he's stepping on toes and rocking the boat. They may firmly believe any bad news about Donald Trump is fake and sponsored by the Illuminati's secret New World Order movement. And with powerful forces like that subverting Donald Trump's efforts to make America great again, they must be fought by any means necessary. So, if that means shutting down the Mueller probe before its run its course or worse, allow the president to give himself a pass, they would understand. Besides, the "Government" should've been investigating Hillary Clinton anyway.
Bottom line: Donald Trump is clearly acting like someone who has something to hide and it's Robert Mueller's job to find out what. With the cast of characters Trump cavorts with, Mueller could easily uncover crimes of tax evasion, money laundering, fraud, and bribery. Let's face it, Donald Trump is a New York businessman. That's how business is conducted in this city until you do something stupid like run for public office. Smart crooks like to stay in the shadows. And with a high profile shark and self-described "fixer" like Michael Cohen kept on retainer, we may be astounded by the amount of dirt this Special Counsel could be in the process of unearthing about America's dirt-bag-in-Chief.
