Issues Under Fire: Donald Trump: I Don't Need No Stinkin' Judges
Normally, by the time the sundial hits the summer solstice, I'd be in slacker's paradise, sipping Tequila with a side of blue tortilla chips and spicy southwestern style salsa or better yet, some hot Jamaican jerk wings and ice cold Thai beer. Not exactly the high life, but it beats observing an ugly world and all of its problems. Unfortunately, this isn't a normal summer. This summer is one to pay attention to. This summer is on course to make history. This summer will live long in your memories because this summer may redefine you. In fact, it may redefine us all, because this summer is about Due Process and why it matters. Give me a minute, and I'll explain.
While Donald Trump battles the invasion and infestation of rapist, murderers, and drug dealing gang members, as well as bloodsucking economic migrants hellbent on working their fingers to the bone for slave wages and no health benefits to steal American jobs, Europe is conflicted and confounded by an influx of refugees, asylum seekers and economic migrants seeking a better life. Although Europe and the United States have very similar issues with migration, the U.S. is taking a novel approach to solving the problem. The U.S. is criminalizing it. If you enter the United States illegally, no matter what the reason, you've broken the law, will be prosecuted and more than likely deported. Especially, if you're crossing America's southern border.
Unfortunately, those migrating from Central America to the United States are having a difficult time convincing the United States they should be considered refugees or asylum seekers. Despite well-documented lawlessness, political corruption and record violence, Guatemalans, Hondurans and El Salvadorians still have an impossible task of getting authorities to believe their stories. Fleeing weekly shakedowns, daily street killings and threats against family members, with no policing authorities willing to or capable of confronting the organized crime in their failed states, one would think someone with a story like that would deserve safe harbor. One would think a story like that should be heard by a judge. Well, one would think.
However, as mentioned above, America is being redefined this summer. And it's being redefined by the following two Tweets:
We cannot allow all of these people to invade our Country. When somebody comes in, we must immediately, with no Judges or Court Cases, bring them back from where they came. Our system is a mockery to good immigration policy and Law and Order. Most children come without parents...
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 24, 2018
....Our Immigration policy, laughed at all over the world, is very unfair to all of those people who have gone through the system legally and are waiting on line for years! Immigration must be based on merit - we need people who will help to Make America Great Again!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 24, 2018
So, just to be clear, America is telling the world, those running for their lives from unmitigated violence, crime, corruption, and persecution they'll not even be given a chance to plead their case before a judge for consideration. The Constitution be damned! Judges and courts only slow the deportation process down. And if deportation is the most likely outcome, why not cut out the middlemen. Think about it. How can these cases be proven? What would be considered credible and irrefutable evidence? Do scars help? Will eyewitness testimony count for much considering that eyewitness is a detainee asylum seeker too? If you've never attended a deportation hearing, you'd probably be interested in knowing the answers to some of these questions. So, here's a useful link.
But, it gets even more worrisome, because if I'm interpreting the second Tweet correctly, this redefined America is seeking only the best of the best to immigrate to the United States. That's what immigration based on merit means. No more lottery visas, "chain migration" or hardship cases. America wants more problem solvers, not more problems. If Donald Trump has his way, migrants coming from poor underdeveloped war-torn shithole countries will never qualify. And if you can believe that, you can believe Donald Trump is cheering Italy's decision to deny a port of entry to the hundreds of North African migrants stranded in the Mediterranean on rescue ships. Yes, Europe has its migration hardliners as well, so it'll be interesting how or if the E.U. can reach a compromise.
Bottom line: One can only hope Europe and rest of the free world is no longer taking its cues from the United States because the message being sent from this administration would be devastating to the 68.5 million refugees forced to flee their homes due to war, violence, and persecution worldwide in 2017. This summer, the United States is pitching building walls, closing doors and throwing the welcome mat away. Migrants are no longer wanted. So, don't call us, we'll call you. And it's all being done under the guise of making America Great Again. Podcast below.
